Overview
The broad education in the Master's degree program in Psychology allows students to pursue independent careers and take on leadership positions in a wide range of professional fields, as well as research-oriented careers in universities and research institutions. The academic training leading to the Master of Science in Psychology provides a basis for further postgraduate training within and outside of psychology (e.g., doctorate, psychotherapy training). In addition, graduates acquire subject-specific qualifications for various professional fields according to their chosen specialization. The Clinical Neuroscience specialization prepares students for a career in clinical and neuropsychological practice and research; graduates usually work in the healthcare sector. The Cognitive Neuroscience specialization prepares students for careers in neuroscience and cognitive science research, evaluation, and diagnostics.
All specializations of the Master's degree in Psychology at the OVGU qualify students to later obtain a license to practice as a psychological psychotherapist according to the previous version the Psychotherapists Act. The transition periods according to §27 of the Psychotherapists Act apply here. The completion of the Master's degree by 2027 at the latest is recommended if you wish to pursue this postgraduate training.
For information on the new Master's program qualifying for postgraduate training to acquire a license to practice according to the reformed version of the Psychotherapists Act of 1 September 2020, please see the Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.
A bachelor’s degree in psychology and the knowledge acquired there is the prerequisite for this Master’s program. You should also be interested in deepening this knowledge in the specific aspects of one of the available specializations.
The Master’s degree lasts four semesters and comprises 120 CP, with 50 CP being allocated to the general part (core curriculum), 40 CP to the specialization, and 30 CP to the 20-week Master's thesis. Part of the core curriculum includes an eight-week internship totaling 10 CP.
