Urban Design and Planning MA
University of Liverpool, United Kingdom
The programme aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of urban design and planning, providing them with a solid foundation in the principles and practices of planning and designing urban spaces. Students will explore the social, economic, and environmental challenges that cities face today and learn how to address these challenges through the development of sustainable and innovative design and planning strategies at various spatial scales. Throughout the programme, students engage with contemporary urban issues including climate change adaptation, social inequality, housing affordability, transportation networks, and public health. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enabling students to understand how design interventions can shape liveable, inclusive, and resilient communities. Students develop proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, analytical frameworks, and design techniques essential to professional practice in urban planning and design. The programme is structured to build expertise progressively, beginning with foundational modules covering planning history, theory, and policy frameworks, before advancing to specialist areas such as sustainable urban development, regeneration, placemaking, and strategic planning. Students gain hands-on experience through studio-based projects, real-world case studies, and collaborative exercises that simulate professional working environments. Technical skills are developed alongside critical thinking, enabling graduates to evaluate complex spatial problems and propose evidence-based solutions. Graduates emerge equipped with the knowledge and capabilities demanded by local authorities, planning consultancies, development organisations, and design practices. The programme prepares students for careers as urban planners, urban designers, policy advisors, and development managers, whilst also providing a strong foundation for further postgraduate study and research. Students develop essential professional competencies including stakeholder engagement, project management, visual communication, and policy analysis that enhance their employability and professional credibility within the built environment sector.
