Program Overview: BEng Mechanical Engineering at University of Limerick

The Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Limerick is a four-year honours degree program that provides a thorough grounding in fundamental engineering subjects while allowing you to specialise in areas of particular relevance to Irish and international industry. Entry is through the LM116 common engineering route, where students complete a shared first year before selecting Mechanical Engineering as their discipline during semester two of Year 1.

Throughout the program, you will study core mechanical engineering subjects including mathematics, mechanics of solids, design, mechanics of fluids, thermodynamics, dynamics of machines, and control. A distinctive feature of the program is the eight-month Cooperative Education placement at the end of Year 2, which gives you hands-on professional experience in an industrial environment before returning to complete your studies.

Mechanical Engineering at UL adheres to the professional guidelines set by Engineers Ireland and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), ensuring your degree is recognised by leading professional bodies. The program prepares graduates for careers across diverse industrial sectors including energy, automotive, biomedical, aerospace, manufacturing, chemical processing, and design consultancy.

Key Program Highlights

  • Common first year allows you to explore engineering disciplines before committing to Mechanical Engineering in semester two
  • Eight-month Cooperative Education placement provides real-world industry experience with leading employers
  • Accredited by Engineers Ireland and aligned with IMechE professional standards
  • Final-year individual project spanning nearly 12 months develops professional engineering capabilities

Curriculum and Modules

The BEng Mechanical Engineering program is divided into two parts. Part I covers the common first year, providing a foundation in fundamental engineering subjects. Part II spans Years 2, 3, and 4, with approximately five modules per semester, progressively building specialist knowledge and culminating in a major individual project.

Engineering Mathematics

Develops mathematical competency essential for mechanical engineering, covering calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and applied mathematical methods used throughout the program.

Mechanics of Solids and Design

Covers stress analysis, material behaviour under load, and mechanical design principles. Students learn to apply engineering mechanics to real-world structural and component design challenges.

Thermodynamics and Energy Systems

Explores the laws of thermodynamics, heat transfer mechanisms, and energy conversion systems. This module provides the foundation for work in power generation, HVAC, and energy efficiency.

Fluid Mechanics

Introduces the principles of fluid statics and dynamics, flow measurement, and applications in piping systems, turbomachinery, and aerodynamics relevant to mechanical engineering practice.

Dynamics of Machines and Control

Covers the kinematics and dynamics of mechanical systems, vibration analysis, and feedback control theory. Students learn to model, analyse, and design dynamic mechanical and control systems.

Cooperative Education Placement

An eight-month industry placement at the end of Year 2 that provides practical experience in a professional engineering environment. Students apply theoretical knowledge to real industrial projects.
