Overview

Accreditation

The MSc in Actuarial Science, MSc in Applied Actuarial Science, and Integrated Master’s at Kent are fully accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, offering a fast-track route to qualifying as an actuary. High-achieving students can gain exemptions from professional examinations. Kent stands out as one of the few UK universities offering actuarial science, blending theoretical and practical expertise. The faculty includes experienced actuaries and specialized researchers. Depending on chosen modules, students may qualify for exemptions from subjects CB1, CB2, CM1, CM2, CS1, and CS2.

Integrated Master's Option

Those considering the Actuarial Science MSc may also apply for the Applied Actuarial Science (Integrated Master's) MSc (2 years). This option allows automatic progression to Stage 2 (subject to satisfactory performance), equivalent to the Applied Actuarial Science MSc, without needing to reapply for a visa. Students can opt out after Stage 1, receiving the full MSc qualification under the Actuarial Science MSc (subject to satisfactory performance).

Centre for Actuarial Science, Risk and Investment (CASRI)

Established in 2010, CASRI reflects the expanding teaching and research scope. Research themes include economic capital, financial risk management, longevity risk modelling, and public policy aspects of insurance risk classification, balancing theoretical and applied investigations.

Future Prospects

The UK actuarial profession, though small, is influential. Over 6,500 actuaries work mainly in insurance and consultancy. Average salaries for student actuaries are around £36,842, with significant increases as experience grows. Chief Actuaries average £209,292. Actuaries engage in diverse tasks, from advising on pension funds and designing insurance policies to pricing financial derivatives and estimating disaster impacts.

Employability Support

Kent prioritizes employability skills development, offering various services to equip students with transferable skills for professional roles. Graduates find success in actuarial, finance, insurance, and risk sectors.
