Caucasiology (BA)

Small but mighty! – And above all, unique in Europe: This is probably the best way to describe the degree program in "Caucasus Studies." It is one of the small disciplines with great research strength and international appeal. The Caucasus is not only a natural border, but has also been a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia for centuries . In this historical field of tension, the region has become a unique contact area, characterized by the coexistence of world religions such as Islam and Christianity, as well as by impressive ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. This constellation offers unique research conditions for regional studies that aim to gain insight into transnational, transcultural, and transconfessional processes through the study of complex spaces. 

During your studies, you will learn about the countries, peoples, and languages . We pursue an interdisciplinary approach and approach the Caucasus from various research fields, such as cultural studies, anthropology (the study of humankind), history, political science, linguistics, and other disciplines. In addition to knowledge of the regions and populations located in the Caucasus, we impart fundamental knowledge of religion, politics, linguistics, and history, which are essential for studying the region. You can also choose from a wide range of courses on both Caucasian languages ​​(e.g., Georgian and Armenian) and contact languages ​​in the Caucasus (e.g., Russian).
