The University of Huddersfield is a public research university located in the heart of West Yorkshire, England. It is widely recognised for its practical, industry-focused education, strong emphasis on employability, and award-winning teaching excellence, having received a Gold rating in all three aspects of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023.
The university traces its origins to 1841, when five young men employed by local industrialist Frederic Schwann founded the Young Men's Mental Improvement Society. Over the following decades, the institution evolved through several incarnations, including the Technical School and Mechanics' Institute, the College of Technology, and Huddersfield Polytechnic, before gaining full university status in 1992.
Today, the University of Huddersfield is home to over 20,000 students from more than 100 countries and is the first university in the UK where 100% of permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. It was named the Most Improved University in the UK in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and was ranked top in the UK in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024.
