The University of Hamburg (Universität Hamburg, UHH) is a public research university and the largest institution for research and education in northern Germany. Founded on 28 March 1919, it was the first university in Germany to be established on democratic principles, created by a resolution of the newly elected Hamburg Parliament during the Weimar Republic.
