Program Overview: Robotics & Artificial Intelligence BEng
The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence BEng (Hons) at the University of Glasgow sits at the intersection of two rapidly evolving fields, combining robotics engineering with AI and machine learning. Delivered by the James Watt School of Engineering, this program equips you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to design, develop, and deploy intelligent robotic systems across a wide range of industries.
The program features a well-equipped Robotics Teaching Laboratory where most hands-on project work and practical teaching takes place. You will study advanced programming, software engineering, power engineering, and electromagnetic compatibility as essential foundations, before progressing to core courses in robotics, machine learning, and AI in your Honours years.
The BEng is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council, partially meeting the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration. Students who perform well may also transfer to the five-year MEng pathway, which fully meets CEng academic requirements.
Key Program Highlights
- IMechE-accredited program partially meeting Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration requirements
- Dedicated Robotics Teaching Laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment for hands-on project work
- Taught within the James Watt School of Engineering, with research-led teaching from leading academics
- Option to transfer to the five-year MEng pathway for students who perform well in years 1 to 3
Curriculum & Modules
The curriculum is structured across four years, building from a common engineering foundation to specialised robotics and AI topics. In the first three years, BEng and MEng students follow the same courses, with the final year focusing on advanced robotics, machine learning, AI, and an individual project.
Engineering Mathematics & Dynamics
Core — Years 1-2Foundational mathematics, dynamics, materials, and thermodynamics courses shared across all engineering programs, providing the analytical tools essential for robotics and AI study.
Electronics & Embedded Systems
Core — Year 2Covers digital and analogue electronics, embedded processor programming, and systems theory, preparing you for the interdisciplinary studies in the Honours years.
Electromagnetism & Power Electronics
Core — Years 2-3Studies power engineering and electromagnetic compatibility, which are essential for the design and operation of any robotic system.
Advanced Programming & Software Engineering
Core — Year 3Develops your programming and software engineering skills as the basis for the artificial intelligence theme, including algorithm design and software development practices.
Robotics, Machine Learning & AI
Core — Year 4The Honours year core courses covering robotics systems, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence techniques, forming the capstone of your technical education.
Individual BEng Project
Core — Year 4An individual project covering robotic and AI themes, enabling you to apply your knowledge to a real-world problem and develop transferable skills for your engineering career.
