The Master of Science in Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources at Justus Liebig University Giessen is an interdisciplinary program that explores insects and insect-associated micro- and macroorganisms as newly emerging bioresources for medicine, plant protection, pharmacy, industrial food, and biotechnology. With more than a million scientifically described species, insects form the largest group of organisms on earth, offering enormous untapped potential for scientific discovery and commercial application.
During your studies, you will work intensively on the systematics and ecology of insects, acquire specific scientific and technical knowledge, and learn about various methodical research approaches. You will investigate insects and their associated organisms as new resources for food, enzymes, and bioactive natural products, ultimately learning to refine fully developed products for industry and society.
This program is offered by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management in cooperation with the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences. Curriculum and Module Structure
The program is organized in modules, each comprising four semester hours per week and completed with a final examination. It consists of eight mandatory core modules, six optional profile modules, a voluntary work placement (or two additional profile modules), and a Master's thesis in the fourth semester.

Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics
6 ECTSFocuses on molecular techniques, genomics, and computational methods used to analyze insect genomes and identify bioactive compounds from insect-associated organisms.
Bioactive Natural Products
6 ECTSExplores the identification, extraction, and characterization of bioactive natural products derived from insects and their associated microorganisms for pharmaceutical and industrial use.
Food Technology and Insect-Based Resources
