Atmospheric and Climate Sciences
University of Frankfurt (Goethe University Frankfurt), Germany
The M.Sc. Atmospheric and Climate Science program is designed to be individualized to your strengths and interests. During your studies, you'll take two core lectures and several smaller elective courses, where you'll gain insight into more niche topics. In your two core lectures, you'll gain expertise and deep insight into at least two of the following research areas: Experimental Atmospheric Research: This field is concerned with measurements of the constituents of the Earth's atmosphere, both gaseous and and non-gaseous. Topics include aerosol formation and evolution, atmospheric chemistry, and gases with high global warming potential. Theoretical Atmospheric Dynamics: This field is concerned with the mathematical description of the atmosphere. From the Navier-Stokes equation, you'll be able to derive large-scale atmospheric circulations, different types of atmospheric waves, and parameterizations for turbulence and other small-scale processes. Mesoscale Meteorology and Climate: This field is concerned with understanding climate processes and simulating the atmosphere under different conditions. You'll gain insights into both small and large scale climate processes, such as the urban heat island or the ice-albedo feedback. Furthermore, you'll learn how to work with weather and climate models. Boundary Layer Meteorology: This field is concerned with the lowest layer of the atmosphere, which interacts with the ground through viscous friction, and where most of the weather happens. You'll describe the boundary layer mathematically and solve it using numerical methods and parameterizations. Atmospheric Physics and Climate (coming soon): This field is concerned with cloud microphysics and macroscale physical processes in the atmosphere. Through both data analysis and modeling, you'll gain insight into the interactions between clouds, aerosols, radiation and the climate. Additionally, we offer the option of up to two minor subjects, excursions, an internship and cooperation with other universities.
