Theatre Directing (2 Years) MFA
University Square Stratford (USS), United Kingdom
Overview
The Theatre Directing programme develops creative, analytical, and leadership skills essential for contemporary theatre makers. The course focuses on the director’s role as an artistic visionary, collaborator, and facilitator, guiding students through the processes of interpreting text, working with performers, and shaping compelling theatrical productions. Students explore a wide range of directing approaches, from classical and contemporary theatre to experimental and devised performance.
Through intensive studio practice, rehearsals, and production projects, students gain hands-on experience directing actors and creative teams. The programme emphasizes collaboration with designers, dramaturgs, and performers, alongside critical reflection and research into theatrical theory, history, and practice. Students are encouraged to develop a distinctive directorial voice while responding to social, cultural, and political contexts.
Professional practice, audience engagement, and production management are integral to the curriculum, preparing students for work within diverse theatre environments. Graduates leave with a strong portfolio of directed work, advanced communication and leadership skills, and the confidence to pursue careers in theatre directing, performance-making, education, or further research in the performing arts.
