Human Rights Advocacy LLM
University Square Stratford (USS), United Kingdom
The course provides advanced knowledge to address human rights challenges in areas such as trade, finance, and governance. Core modules cover international law, research skills, and human rights protection within global systems, including the United Nations and the European, African, and American human rights conventions. Students explore key issues such as freedom from torture, freedom of expression, the rights of women and children, minority rights, and emerging challenges including climate change and humanitarian protection during armed conflict.
Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as international finance, financial crime, corporate governance, international trade, criminal law, environmental law, refugee law, and energy regulation. The programme includes a 15,000-word dissertation or an applied project that enables students to address real-world legal problems, alongside skills workshops designed to enhance employability and mental wealth competencies.
An optional placement year offers hands-on experience in social welfare law through established partnerships. This option is available after the first year of study and must be indicated at the time of application, particularly for international students.
Teaching takes place in the evenings and is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based learning, case studies, and podcasts. Learning is further enriched by guest lectures from leading experts, including figures such as Michael Ignatieff, and supported by specialist facilities such as a mooting room and a law clinic.
Assessment is based on coursework for four 30-credit modules (approximately 7,000 words each) and the dissertation. The programme can be completed full-time in one year or part-time over two years. It prepares graduates for careers in international organisations, non-governmental organisations, law firms, government, or academia, with a strong emphasis on practical advocacy and the development of clinical legal skills.
