Criminology and Law BA

The course explores how legal systems respond to crime, social harm, and inequality, while engaging with current debates in human rights, justice reform, and policing. Learning occurs through lectures, seminars, workshops, and case-based activities designed to build understanding of the intersection between law and criminology in addressing social issues. Students develop analytical, problem-solving, research, and advocacy skills via collaborative projects, professional workshops, and guest sessions with practitioners from government, NGOs, and the voluntary sector. The program includes foundational modules on law, crime, and sociology, with opportunities for year-long placements between years two and three, extending the duration to four years. In the final year, students undertake an independently researched project and choose from 23 options such as environmental law, environmental and green chemistry, Global Illicit Drug Trafficking or Introduction to Islamic Law. The course prepares for careers in criminology and legal professions, emphasizing real-world practice through external speakers and simulations. It also offers a foundation year option for those needing additional support, focusing on academic and professional skills development. Modules cover key areas like criminal justice processes, constitutional arrangements, and sociological theories of crime.
