Program Overview: BA in Design Arts and Practice
The Bachelor of Arts in Design Arts and Practice at the University of Arizona provides a foundation in design history, theory, and practice from an interdisciplinary perspective. This four-year, 120-credit degree prepares you to collaboratively work across media, scales, and disciplines to tackle the world's most complex problems.
Through project-based courses, you will develop core conceptual and technical skills to design artifacts and experiences across a range of scales and media. The program is jointly offered through the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) and the School of Art at the University of Arizona. Students select an emphasis area aligned with their academic interests and career goals, including Object Design, Spatial Design, Print Design, or Screen Design.

Curriculum and Modules
The BA in Design Arts and Practice curriculum moves from foundations and skills in the first two years to theories and issues, culminating in a capstone project. The degree is comprised of Foundation courses, Core courses in your selected emphasis area, transdisciplinary electives, Upper-Division History and Theory courses, and the Senior Capstone.
Visual Communication Foundations
3 UnitsIntroduces essential methods of visual communication and ordering systems through interrelated exercises, including investigative sketching, freehand drawing, and digital design communication.
Design History
3 UnitsA comprehensive history of design beginning with the industrial revolution, covering graphic design, industrial design, technological advances, mass communications, consumer culture, avant-garde design, and postmodernism.
Typography and Letterforms
3 UnitsStudy of letterforms and their appropriate and effective use in visual communications from both a historic and contemporary perspective.
Web and Interface Design
3 UnitsAn introduction to web design covering online graphics, information structures, site development, research, site maps, icons, and interface design concepts.
Digital Fabrication and Production
3 UnitsHands-on experience with digital fabrication tools and techniques for artistic production, with conceptual focus on new forms made possible by digital tools.
Senior Capstone Project
6 UnitsDevelopment of a design project that embodies a student's design position, situated historically and addressing contemporary issues through transdisciplinary research and application.
