Program Overview: Urban Planning, Design and Management BSc at UCL

The Urban Planning, Design and Management BSc at UCL is designed to train a new generation of urban practitioners with the skills and creativity to understand, manage and deliver urban change. Taught at The Bartlett School of Planning, you will learn from leading academic experts how urban planning and design transforms our towns and cities.

You will gain an understanding of how economic, social and environmental dimensions impact our urban environments, building specialist knowledge from modules about spatial planning, urban design, transport, climate change, rural planning, urban regeneration, and real estate development. The program features hands-on fieldwork, site visits, and live project work engaging with real urban planning challenges in and around London.

This degree is accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), providing a pathway to professional membership. Curriculum and Modules

The program is structured across three years, with eight compulsory modules each year providing in-depth knowledge of urban change. In each year you take modules valued at 15 or 30 credits, totalling 120 credits per year and 360 credits for the full degree. The curriculum is built around three core streams: understanding urban change, managing urban change, and delivering urban change.

Understanding Urban Change

30 credits

Places settlements in their historical context and examines why urban areas have developed in spatial and non-spatial ways at different scales. Explores how contemporary cities are continuing to change and the forces driving urban transformation.

Urban Design: Principles and Practice

30 credits

Introduces the theories, methodologies, and techniques of urban design used widely across the built environment professions. Develops skills in industry-relevant software applications, graphic communication, and GIS.

Spatial Planning and Policy

15 credits

Examines the planning system and its role in managing urban development and land use. Covers planning policy frameworks, governance structures, and the relationship between planning and sustainable development.

Transport and Urban Infrastructure

15 credits

Explores the relationship between transport systems, urban form, and accessibility. Analyses how infrastructure planning contributes to sustainable urban environments and addresses challenges of mobility.

Urban Regeneration and Development

30 credits

Focuses on the processes, policies, and practices of urban regeneration. Provides hands-on project work to put theoretical knowledge into practice through design, regeneration, and local or strategic planning work.

Planning Project and Dissertation

30 credits

A capstone module in which you undertake an independent research project or planning project on a topic of your choice. Develops professional report writing, research methodology, and analytical skills essential for planning practice.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Urban Planning, Design and Management BSc at UCL is competitive.
