Program Overview: B.S. in Biology at Texas State University
The Bachelor of Science in Biology at Texas State University prepares students for entrance into medical or other professional schools, graduate programs, or direct entry into the workforce in laboratories or the field. Located on the beautiful San Marcos campus with a river running through it, the program offers access to unique ecological resources and research opportunities in the heart of Texas.
Biology majors take a minimum of eleven courses that include the core curriculum of functional biology, organismal biology, genetics, a biological diversity course, a physiology course, ecology, and evolution. Additional required courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics provide the broad scientific background foundational to the biological sciences.
At the sophomore level and above, a variety of courses in cellular, molecular, computational, and organismal biology ensure you can attain a broad education in the biological sciences as well as a level of specialization in its subdisciplines. Undergraduate students are encouraged to engage in internships and undergraduate research, gaining hands-on experience that strengthens career readiness.
Key Program Highlights
- Comprehensive core curriculum spanning functional biology, organismal biology, genetics, ecology, physiology, and evolution
- Strong preparation for medical school, dental school, veterinary school, and other professional health programs
- Access to unique research environments including the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and the San Marcos River ecosystem
- Flexibility to specialize through advanced electives and a required minor, with Chemistry or Biochemistry recommended
Curriculum and Modules
The B.S. in Biology requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including at least 36 advanced hours at the 3000-4000 level and 9 writing-intensive credit hours. The curriculum integrates foundational biology courses with supporting coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, plus a required minor chosen from the approved list of undergraduate minors.
Functional Biology
3 Credit HoursProvides a strong foundation in cellular and molecular biology, covering biochemistry, energy metabolism, molecular bases of gene regulation, protein functions, cell division and control, and cell signaling.
Organismal Biology with Laboratory
4 Credit HoursIntroduces experimental design, scientific method and inquiry, statistical analyses, and research paper writing. Topics include Mendelian and population genetics, natural selection, population ecology, phylogeny, and behavioral ecology.
Genetics
4 Credit HoursAn introduction to basic principles of genetics through studies of Mendelian, molecular, quantitative, and population genetics. Topics include classical transmission genetics, gene mapping, DNA replication and repair, transcription, translation, and genetic engineering techniques.
Ecology
3 Credit HoursExamines the interactions between organisms and their environment, including population dynamics, community ecology, ecosystem processes, and current environmental issues such as climate change and conservation biology.
Evolution
3 Credit HoursCovers the mechanisms and evidence of biological evolution, including natural selection, genetic drift, speciation, phylogenetics, and the history of life on Earth.
Advanced Physiology
4 Credit HoursAn upper-level course exploring the physiological mechanisms of living organisms. Students select from approved physiology courses covering topics such as human physiology, animal physiology, or plant physiology.
