Political Science
Main Campus Camden, United States
Overview
The Political Science major at Rutgers University–Camden offers students a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of political systems, institutions, and ideologies—both in the United States and around the world. Designed to cultivate critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication, the program equips students to examine the philosophical foundations and practical functions of political organization, governance, and public action.
The curriculum is structured around three core areas of concentration:
- American Politics and Public Policy, which delves into the structure and operation of U.S. political institutions, policy-making processes, civil liberties, and contemporary political issues;
- International Politics and Political Theory, which explores global political dynamics, international relations, political ideologies, and historical theories of power, justice, and governance;
- Political Methodology, which introduces students to the tools and techniques of political research, including data analysis, survey research, and empirical methods.
Political Science students are encouraged to think deeply about the meaning of citizenship, democracy, justice, and rights in a rapidly evolving world. Through engaging coursework, faculty mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities such as internships, research assistantships, and study abroad, students build strong academic and professional foundations.
For highly motivated students, the department offers accelerated dual-degree programs in partnership with the Rutgers Law School and the Department of Public Policy and Administration, allowing them to earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree in a streamlined format.
Graduates of the Political Science program are well-prepared for a variety of career paths, including law, public policy, government, non-profit work, international relations, journalism, education, and business. Many also go on to pursue advanced degrees in law, political science, public administration, or international affairs.
This major is ideal for students who are passionate about politics, global issues, civic engagement, and the pursuit of justice in both local and international contexts.
