Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma Overview
The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) Diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic prepares you for high-demand careers in the rapidly growing manufacturing, petroleum, and infrastructure design industries in Central Alberta. Through both hands-on and theoretical approaches, you will learn mechanical engineering fundamentals including mathematics, solid mechanics, thermal-fluid sciences, and kinematics, blended with industry-focused topics such as automation, control, lean and computer-integrated manufacturing, and reliability.
This program is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) and recognized across Canada by Engineering Technologist professional organizations, such as the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET). With career experience, graduates can become a Certified Engineering Technologist and, with additional specialized experience, a Professional Technologist.
Red Deer Polytechnic re-introduced this enhanced diploma in Fall 2023 after consulting with students, industry partners, and content experts to ensure the curriculum meets the evolving needs of learners and business communities. The increased component of lab-based applied learning complements academic theory, with capstone engineering projects taking place in cutting-edge facilities such as the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC).
Key Program Highlights
- Nationally accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) with a direct route to professional designations
- Enhanced lab-based applied learning in advanced manufacturing facilities including the CIM-TAC
- Pathway to Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) and Professional Technologist (P.Tech.) designations
- Small class sizes with expert faculty who have extensive industry experience
Curriculum and Modules
The Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma curriculum integrates applied and theoretical engineering approaches across four semesters over two years. You will develop competencies in engineering design, physical systems planning and simulation, technology-driven manufacturing, fabrication sequencing, computer and robotic automation, component testing, and systems reliability.
Study the fundamental principles of statics, dynamics, and strength of materials. Gain practical understanding of material properties, stress analysis, and deformation in engineering applications.
Explore thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles essential for mechanical systems design. Apply theoretical concepts to real-world thermal and fluid system problems.
Learn the analysis and design of mechanical linkages, cams, gears, and other machine elements. Develop skills in motion analysis and mechanism design for industrial applications.
Study the principles of automated systems, robotics, and control theory used in modern manufacturing environments. Gain hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers and automated equipment.
Develop proficiency in CAD/CAM software, CNC programming, and lean manufacturing principles. Learn to integrate computer technology into manufacturing processes for improved efficiency and quality.
