Program Overview: Instrumentation and Automation Engineering Technology
The Instrumentation and Automation Engineering Technology (IAET) Diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic equips you with the knowledge and skills of measurement techniques, control strategies, robotics, and automatic control of industrial machines and equipment. This two-year diploma prepares you to respond to the dynamic challenges of modern industrial automation across multiple sectors.
In this program, you will master the skills to maintain, install, and design the systems used to measure, monitor, and control processes in industries such as food and beverage, oil and gas, water treatment, power generation, agriculture, and petrochemical operations. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, innovative design, and the diagnosis and troubleshooting of technical problems.
Through applied learning and a capstone project, you will develop proficiency in design, problem-solving, and collaboration in diverse settings. Red Deer Polytechnic's enhanced IAET program was developed in consultation with students, industry partners, and content experts, featuring an increased component of lab-based applied learning that complements academic theory.
Key Program Highlights
- Hands-on experience with robotics, industrial process control, and measurement instrumentation in dedicated lab facilities
- Capstone project providing real-world design, problem-solving, and collaboration experience
- Curriculum developed with industry partners to meet current labour market demands across Alberta and beyond
- Access to applied research through RDP's Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC)
Curriculum and Course Modules
The IAET diploma curriculum is structured over four semesters across two years, blending theoretical foundations with extensive lab-based applied learning. You will progress from foundational engineering principles to advanced instrumentation, automation, and control system design.
Covers the principles of industrial measurement including pressure, temperature, level, and flow measurement. Students learn to select, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation devices used in process industries.
Explores control system theory including PID control, feedback and feedforward loops, and process control strategies. Students gain practical experience tuning controllers and optimizing system performance.
Introduces the fundamentals of industrial robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and automated manufacturing systems. Emphasis is placed on programming, integration, and troubleshooting of robotic systems.
Provides a foundation in electrical circuits, electronic components, and signal processing as they apply to instrumentation and control systems. Includes hands-on lab work with circuit analysis and testing equipment.
Focuses on the automatic control of industrial processes and equipment across sectors such as oil and gas, water treatment, and power generation. Students learn to design, implement, and maintain control systems for complex industrial operations.
