Curriculum and Modules

The MSc Artificial Intelligence is structured around compulsory core modules covering the fundamentals of machine learning, AI, natural language processing, and ethics in digital information processing. In addition, you choose one of two specialist streams during Welcome Week based on your interests, and complete a major individual project on your chosen AI specialisation.

Machine Learning

15 credits

Covers the fundamental principles and techniques of machine learning, including supervised and unsupervised learning, model evaluation, and practical implementation using industry-standard tools and libraries.

Artificial Intelligence

15 credits

Explores core AI concepts including search algorithms, knowledge representation, reasoning, and planning. Provides a solid theoretical foundation for understanding intelligent systems.

Natural Language Processing

15 credits

Introduces techniques for processing and understanding human language, including text classification, sentiment analysis, and working with large language models for various NLP tasks.

Ethics, Regulation, and Law in Digital Information Processing

15 credits

Examines the ethical, legal, and regulatory dimensions of AI and digital information systems, covering topics such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability in AI decision-making.

Deep Learning

15 credits

Provides in-depth study of deep neural network architectures, including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and generative models, with practical experience building and training deep learning systems.

MSc Individual Project (Dissertation)

A major independent research project where you work closely with a supervisor to investigate an AI topic of your choice. The dissertation typically comprises 10,000 to 15,000 words and demonstrates your ability to apply AI techniques to a real-world problem.
