German and Linguistics (Hons)

German and Linguistics at Queen Mary combines intensive language study with theoretical exploration of language, offering modules that cover culture, linguistics, and specialised topics such as AI and languages. The curriculum spans four years, with mandatory language modules each year, optional electives in the second and fourth years, and a dedicated year abroad during which students may teach, study, or work in a German‑speaking context. Teaching comprises weekly lectures, seminars and small‑group language classes, complemented by independent study, and assessment includes research diaries, oral examinations, written exams and a final research project that employs contemporary linguistic data and theoretical frameworks. The School provides extensive facilities, including a multimedia language centre, phonetics laboratory and extensive language resources, supporting diverse learning activities, research initiatives and collaborations with cultural institutions and industry partners. Students also participate in language clubs, film screenings and academic seminars, contributing to a vibrant multilingual community.
