Curriculum and Modules
The Spanish and Latin American Studies major requires 30 credits, with no more than 6 credits at the 100 or 200 level. All majors must complete a Spanish grammar course and a required core course, with 9 credits at the 400 level. The program is carefully planned in consultation with a faculty advisor to ensure oral and writing competence in Spanish.
Advanced Spanish Grammar (SPAN 307/308)
3 CreditsA required course for all majors focusing on advanced grammatical structures, enabling students to achieve precision and fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
Spanish for Business (SPAN 317)
3 CreditsAn introduction to modern business terminology in Spanish, including a review of major grammatical structures and discussion of cultural factors that affect commercial transactions.
Special Topics in Hispanic Culture Studies (SPAN 320)
3 CreditsAn intensive study of a particular region of the Spanish-speaking world or a cultural topic common to all Hispanic countries. Topics change yearly to provide diverse perspectives.
Spanish Civilization (SPAN 340)
3 CreditsExplores the major issues that have affected Spain through film, art, and the reading of historical and literary texts, providing deep cultural and historical context.
Spanish Across the Curriculum (SPAN 321)
1 CreditAn advanced course designed to further develop the student's command of Spanish through readings and discussions related to a course the student is currently taking. May be repeated up to 3 times.
400-Level Spanish Electives
