Program Overview: Electrical Techniques at Loyalist College

The Electrical Techniques certificate program at Loyalist College provides foundational skills in electrical principles and building construction wiring over one year of intensive study. As dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers, making this program a strong entry point into the electrical trades.

Students receive practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors. The program delivers a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.

Located on a 200-acre campus in Belleville, Ontario — positioned between Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal — Loyalist College offers small class sizes and hands-on experience with industry equipment. Graduates can progress directly into year two of the Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial diploma program or pursue apprenticeship opportunities.

Key Program Highlights

  • Hands-on work with actual Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) from your first year, not just simulation software
  • Eligibility to challenge Autodesk certification exams, earning industry-recognized credentials valued by employers
  • Direct pathway into year two of the Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial diploma program
  • Program may be Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligible for international students

Curriculum and Course Modules

The Electrical Techniques curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on practice across two semesters. Students develop skills in electrical installation, motor control, safety codes, and the fundamentals of industrial automation.

Electrical Principles and Circuits

Students learn the basics of translating diagrams to working circuits, covering electrical diagrams and symbols, and building circuits correctly from electrical schematics including extra low-voltage communication, alarm, and control systems.

Motor Control and Industrial Applications

Students install electric motor control circuits using relays, contactors, starters, push buttons, and other electrical control devices. The course also covers electronic and electro-mechanical sensing devices commonly used in industrial applications.

Ontario Electrical Safety Code

This course is entirely focused on the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Students learn through exercises to demonstrate the ability to use the code book to determine proper equipment, installation, and maintenance requirements for electrical equipment.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

Provides an overview of PLC installation, I/O wiring procedures, general programming procedures, memory basics, number systems, timers, counters, arithmetic functions, number comparison, and data move functions.

Electrical Mathematics

This math course provides skills in basic math, trigonometry, geometry, and algebra relevant to solving problems within the Electrical program.

Health and Safety in the Electrical Trades

Students learn the rights and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Safety related to overhead cranes, forklifts, proper hook-ups, lifting loads, and awareness of safety concerns within the industry are introduced.
