Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial
Loyalist College
Electrical Engineering & Industrial Automation
Program Overview: Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial
The Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial diploma program at Loyalist College prepares you for a rewarding career in electrical installation, motor control, and industrial automation. As automation continues to evolve across various industries, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals who can drive manufacturing and industrial transformation.
During your first year, you gain a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation. You will work hands-on with actual Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) from your very first year, not just simulation software, and develop a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
The second year delivers advanced skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining, and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems. Graduates can enter the workforce directly, pursue apprenticeship pathways, or continue their education through university transfer agreements across Canada and abroad.
Key Program Highlights
- Hands-on training with real PLCs and industrial automation equipment from the first year of study
- Opportunity to earn a double diploma by entering the Mechatronics program with advanced standing in as few as two additional semesters
- Eligibility to take Autodesk certification exams, adding industry-recognized credentials to your resume
- Instructors with extensive industry backgrounds in manufacturing, engineering, construction, technology, and telecommunications
Curriculum & Modules
The curriculum is structured across four semesters over two years. The first year builds foundational knowledge in electrical principles and construction wiring, while the second year focuses on advanced industrial automation, PLC programming, and robotic systems. You will learn through a combination of theory and extensive hands-on lab work using industry-standard tools and equipment.
Electrical Fundamentals
Semester 1Learn fundamental electrical principles including DC series, parallel and combination resistive, capacitive and inductive circuits. Basic AC and an introduction to three-phase power are also covered, along with mathematical concepts used to describe basic electricity and electronics.
Electrical Wiring and Installation
Semester 1-2Learn basic installation practices relating to electrical wiring systems used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Students use hand tools, machinery, and the actual materials used in industry, with emphasis on quality of work and safe professional working practices.
Motor Control Systems
Semester 2Install electric motor control circuits using relays, contactors, starters, push buttons, and other industrial components. Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control, and the basics of industrial processes including fluid power and process control.
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Semester 2-3Gain hands-on experience programming and configuring PLCs for industrial applications. The advanced PLC course covers Tag Based Programming on the ControlLogix Platform, Remote I/O, and network control for complex automation systems.
Industrial Process Control and Analog Systems
Semester 3-4Demonstrate how to interface analog control into the automation system as a whole. Covers the TPM (Totally Productive Maintenance) system and the basics of project management as it relates to electrical work, including estimating both time and materials.
Motion Control and Variable Frequency Drives
Semester 4An overview of motion control concepts including the functionality, applications, and programming of Variable Frequency Drives and how they are interfaced to the control system using automation networks. Students also study Servo Systems and the application of DC and AC motors.
