Civil Engineering BS
LSU Campus, United States
Overview
Civil engineering is at the heart of building and maintaining the physical world around us. At LSU, the Civil Engineering program prepares students to design, construct, and manage the infrastructure that supports modern life—from bridges, highways, and airports to water treatment systems, levees, and coastal protection projects. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, while also offering specialized training in the many sub-disciplines of civil engineering, including structural design, transportation systems, geotechnical engineering, water resources, construction management, surveying, and coastal subsidence.
Students learn both in the classroom and through hands-on projects, laboratories, and fieldwork that reflect real-world challenges. LSU’s location in Louisiana—an area facing unique engineering challenges like coastal erosion, flooding, and subsidence—provides students with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and community-impact projects that address some of the most pressing engineering problems today.
Graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in structural design firms, the petrochemical industry, environmental consulting, or with government agencies such as the Department of Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local municipalities. Many also continue their education through advanced graduate studies. With a focus on innovation, resilience, and sustainability, LSU’s Civil Engineering program equips students with the knowledge, technical skills, and leadership abilities needed to make meaningful contributions to society and to help shape the future of safe and sustainable infrastructure.
