Discover Liverpool Hope University: History and Mission

Liverpool Hope University is a public university located in Liverpool, England, with roots dating back to 1844 when its first founding college, St Katharine's, was established as a teacher training institution. It is the only ecumenical university foundation in Europe where Catholic and Anglican colleges have come together to form an integrated Christian institution. The university received full university status in 2005 after being granted taught degree awarding powers in 2002.

The university's name derives from Hope Street, the road that links Liverpool's two cathedrals — the Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral — symbolising the ecumenical spirit of unity between faiths. This unique heritage was shaped by the partnership of Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock in the 1980s, whose collaboration brought together three founding colleges: St Katharine's (1844), Notre Dame College (1856), and Christ's College (1964).

Today, Liverpool Hope University offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across four faculties and nine schools. The university's distinctive philosophy is to educate in the round — mind, body and spirit — and it maintains a strong commitment to research-led teaching, with 61% of its research outputs rated as world leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework 2021.

Key Milestones

  • 1844: St Katharine's College founded as one of England's first teacher training colleges, opening higher education to women and underrepresented groups.
  • 1995: The institution was renamed Liverpool Hope University College, establishing the Hope brand inspired by Hope Street linking Liverpool's two cathedrals.
  • 2005: The Privy Council granted university status, officially establishing Liverpool Hope University as a recognised degree-awarding institution.
  • 2009: The university gained the right to award research degrees for postgraduate programmes, strengthening its research mission.
