The MA Sustainable Fashion: Business and Practices at Kingston University London challenges current thinking in the fashion industry by embedding holistic sustainable design and business solutions throughout the curriculum. As a practice-based program, it equips you with the knowledge and skills to effect positive change through creative problem-solving, management expertise, and innovative decision-making.

Delivered within the Kingston School of Art, this program is designed to create systemic change and help combat fashion's unsustainable footprint. You will study the human and environmental impacts of the mainstream fashion system throughout the entirety of the value chain, developing tangible solutions that contribute positively to society, culture, and ecology.

The program is a registered member of the United Nations Education and Academia Stakeholder Group (EASG) in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. You can choose your individual area of focus with either a practice, business, or systems-design outcome, ensuring your outputs have real-world applications and transformational potential.

The MA Sustainable Fashion: Business and Practices curriculum is structured around critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and hands-on project work. All modules adhere to the four pillars of sustainability — economic, environmental, social, and cultural — preparing you to develop implementable solutions that challenge existing fashion industry practices.

Fashion's Value Chain

30 Credits

This module addresses the diversity of impacts and challenges within the fashion system, focusing on the value chain to develop an in-depth understanding of the ethical and environmental problems perpetuating the industry's unsustainability.

Sustainable Design Principles, Perspectives and Practices

30 Credits

Explores key principles and perspectives that inform various practices of sustainability, sustainable development, and sustainable design in both developed and developing world contexts, examining how contemporary design practice relates to the sustainability agenda.

Social Design and Community Partnership

30 Credits

A partnership project with an under-represented community, using fashion as a lens to tackle societal bias and stereotyping while encouraging critical discourse about inclusion, diversity, and representation.

Sustainable Business Models and Technology

30 Credits

Reviews alternative business types and operational strategies that positively impact people and planet, with a particular focus on the role technology plays in the sustainability of business, product, and operations.

Artisan Collaboration Project

30 Credits

Focuses on human-centred design modalities, working collaboratively with textile artisan communities to develop strategies that sustain or expand upon their material culture, re-evaluating the hierarchies embedded within the western fashion system.

Major Capstone Project

60 Credits

The capstone project consolidates knowledge from earlier modules, challenging you to push boundaries with radical outputs that have transformational potential. You negotiate your own output — from brand development and services to technological solutions — as long as it affects positive change in the fashion industry.

Admission Requirements

The MA Sustainable Fashion: Business and Practices welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds including fashion, business, multimedia, and design. Academic Requirements

  • Undergraduate DegreeA 2:2 or above honours degree (or international equivalent) in a fashion or business-related subject
