Mechanical Engineering BEng Program Overview

The Mechanical Engineering program at Istanbul Okan University prepares undergraduate students for successful careers as mechanical or automotive engineers and for advanced graduate studies. The program combines rigorous theoretical education with hands-on practical training in modern laboratories, covering areas such as energy systems, automotive engineering, manufacturing, and mechatronics.

Situated on the Tuzla Campus in Istanbul, the department is strategically located near major mechanical engineering industries in the Marmara region, close to research centers, technoparks, and the international Sabiha Gokcen Airport. This proximity to industry enables strong partnerships and internship opportunities with leading companies in the automotive, energy, and manufacturing sectors.

All courses are taught entirely in English, giving international students the opportunity to earn a globally recognized engineering degree without needing to master Turkish beforehand. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences holds MUDEK (EUR-ACE) accreditation, meaning graduates' diplomas are recognized across Europe, the USA, Canada, and many other countries.

Key Program Highlights

  • EUR-ACE accredited program with international diploma recognition across Europe, USA, and Canada
  • 100% English-medium instruction with access to modern CAD/CAM, heat and fluid, and mechanical workshop laboratories
  • Strategic campus location near major automotive OEMs, suppliers, and research centers in Istanbul's industrial Marmara region
  • Erasmus+ and ISEP exchange opportunities with over 350 partner universities worldwide

Curriculum and Core Modules

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum spans eight semesters over four years, blending foundational sciences, core engineering disciplines, and specialized electives. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills through project-based learning, industry internships, and a capstone graduation project.

Statics and Strength of Materials

12 ECTS

Covers principles of statics, force vectors, equilibrium of rigid bodies, stress and strain analysis, bending, torsion, and failure criteria essential for structural design.

Thermodynamics I and II

12 ECTS

Introduces the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics, properties of pure substances and ideal gases, and engineering applications including vapor power systems, gas power cycles, and refrigeration.

Dynamics and Kinematics of Machines

12 ECTS

Explores kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies, including Newton's laws, work-energy principles, impulse-momentum methods, and planar and three-dimensional motion analysis.

Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics

12 ECTS

Examines conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer mechanisms alongside fluid statics, flow dynamics, and their applications in HVAC and energy systems engineering.

Mechanical Engineering Design

6 ECTS

Focuses on the systematic design process for mechanical components and systems, integrating CAD tools, material selection, manufacturing considerations, and engineering standards.

Graduation Project and Internship

12 ECTS

A capstone experience where students undertake an industry-linked engineering project and complete a structured internship, applying their accumulated knowledge to real-world mechanical engineering challenges.

Elective Specialization Courses

Renewable Energy Systems Robotics and Automation Automotive Engineering Fundamentals Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing
