Balkan Studies

In addition to political analysis, the program introduces students to the economic policies of Balkan countries, the development and role of civil society, and the processes of democratic transition and consolidation. A significant component of the postgraduate curriculum includes the historical study of key periods that have shaped the modern identities, states, and relations among Balkan peoples. The program also provides critical insight into the region’s ethno-cultural heterogeneity, aiming to foster a comprehensive understanding of its complexity. Students are trained in designing and conducting research using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, with a strong emphasis on the practical application of their findings.

The overarching goal of the program is to equip students with advanced knowledge in the field of Balkan Studies and to promote a deep understanding of relevant theoretical and empirical research. Graduates will be prepared to critically, objectively, and systematically engage with contemporary scientific developments in the discipline.

Upon completion of the program, candidates will be awarded the academic title of Master in Balkan Studies. They will be qualified to work as experts on the Balkans engaged in analysis of regional societies and policies and as professional researchers capable of contributing to academia, policy institutions, and a range of sectors requiring in-depth regional expertise.
