Founded in 1386 by Elector Palatine Rupert I with the permission of Pope Urban VI, Heidelberg University — officially known as Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg or Ruperto Carola — is Germany's oldest university and one of the oldest surviving universities in the world. It was the third university established in the Holy Roman Empire, after Prague and Vienna, and was originally modeled on the University of Paris.
