Program Overview: MS in Mechanical Engineering at Fairfield University

Fairfield University's Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) is a 30-credit program designed to serve the needs of practicing engineers and those aspiring to an advanced degree in mechanical engineering and related specializations. The program educates students in methods of advanced engineering analysis, including the mathematical and computational skills required for advanced problem solving.

Students can specialize in one of two broad concentrations: Thermal Systems or Mechanical Systems. The Thermal Systems track covers aerospace, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, turbomachinery, combustion, and heat and mass transfer, while the Mechanical Systems track includes automation, robotics, mechatronics, composite materials, and fracture mechanics.

Located on a scenic 200-acre campus in Fairfield, Connecticut, just over an hour from New York City, the program offers flexible scheduling with evening and weekend courses to accommodate working professionals. Class sizes are kept small, typically ranging from fewer than 12 to a maximum of 20 students, ensuring personalized attention from faculty.

Key Program Highlights

  • Two specialization tracks: Thermal Systems and Mechanical Systems
  • Hands-on experience with industry tools including ANSYS, FLUENT, MATLAB, and LabView
  • Flexible evening and weekend scheduling for working professionals
  • Optional master's thesis pathway for research-oriented students

Curriculum and Course Modules

The MSME curriculum is structured as a 30-credit course of study combining core engineering coursework with elective specialization in either Thermal Systems or Mechanical Systems. Students following the non-thesis option select additional courses for a total of 27 elective credits, while thesis-track students complete a research thesis alongside their coursework.

Control Systems

3 Credits

Covers classical and modern control system design including modeling of dynamic systems, time and frequency domain methods, stability criteria, PID controller action, root locus methods, and state-space formulation using MATLAB.

Automation

3 Credits

A hands-on course covering components in automation systems and automated production lines, including industrial sensors, actuators, PLCs, robot arms, pneumatics devices, and ladder logic programming.

Design of Mechatronics Systems

3 Credits

Covers the development of mechatronics theory and applications to systems integrating mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Students assemble hardware components to create product designs fulfilling specified tasks.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

3 Credits

Provides advanced instruction in numerical methods for analyzing fluid flow, heat transfer, and related phenomena using industry-standard simulation software such as ANSYS FLUENT.

Advanced Dynamics

3 Credits

Explores advanced topics in dynamics of mechanical systems, including Lagrangian mechanics, vibrations analysis, and computational approaches to complex dynamic problems.

Master's Thesis (Optional)

6 Credits

An optional research thesis allowing students to conduct original research under faculty supervision, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense. Students who opt out take two additional elective courses instead.

Elective Specialization Areas

Renewable Energy and Energy Conversion Composite Materials and Fracture Mechanics Robotics and Mechatronics Applications Turbomachinery and Combustion
