Program Overview: BFA in Costume Technology
The Theatre School's BFA in Costume Technology at DePaul University is designed to prepare students for success in a variety of roles in traditional fields as well as emerging areas of the costume industry. The comprehensive four-year curriculum simulates a theatrical costume technician's professional experience and process, giving you the skills to translate costume designs into finished garments and accessories worn by actors on stage.
Students gain practical production experience as stitchers, first hands, drapers, craftspeople, wardrobe assistants, and shop assistants during The Theatre School's production season. You will learn a variety of skills including sewing, pattern making, cutting, fitting, millinery, mask making, painting, dyeing, and business management coursework.
The curriculum is collaborative, human-focused, equity-minded, and sustainably driven. Students are encouraged to complete at least one professional internship during their time in the program and participate in the Michael Merritt Award Portfolio Showcase during their final year, presenting their work to artistic directors and industry professionals in theatre, film, and television.

A two-course series introducing the fundamentals of theatrical design, including visual composition, color theory, and conceptual thinking. Paired with figure drawing coursework.
Second-year courses building on foundational skills with advanced flat patterning, three-dimensional draping techniques, and specialized costume crafts including millinery and accessories.
A two-course series in costume design paired with a two-course series in wig and makeup artistry. Students develop an understanding of the full design-to-execution pipeline.
