Program Overview: Mechanical Technician - Tool and Die/Tool Maker
This two-year Ontario College Diploma program prepares you to produce high-quality tooling and machined components for the precision machining and tool industries. The curriculum covers the production, repair, and modification of custom-made prototypes, special tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges, as well as high-precision hand fitting, positioning, aligning, and assembly techniques for stamping dies and special purpose machinery.
In the final term, you will specialize in die making techniques, and the program covers all learning outcomes for Level 1 and Level 2 of the Ontario apprenticeship program. As a graduate, you may be exempt from completing in-school apprenticeship training for Levels 1 and 2 should you choose to pursue a tool and die maker or general machinist apprenticeship.
The optional co-op stream, available only to students starting in September, includes two back-to-back paid co-op work terms that provide authentic workplace experience. This program is delivered at Conestoga's Cambridge - Reuter Drive campus, which is recognized as a leading facility for skilled trades training in Ontario.

Curriculum & Modules
The Mechanical Technician - Tool and Die/Tool Maker program delivers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical training across four academic terms. You will develop proficiency in precision machining, blueprint reading, CNC programming, metallurgy, and die making, preparing you for immediate entry into the manufacturing workforce.
Precision Machining Theory & Practice
CoreDevelop skills to produce components at a rate comparable with a Year I Apprentice in all aspects of machining including saws, hand tools, drilling machines, lathes, milling machines, and surface and cylindrical grinders.
Engineering Drawings & CAD Solid Modelling
CoreLearn essential skills to read, create, and edit shop-related blueprints, interpret multi-view mechanical drawings, transfer dimensioned information to physical measurements, and accurately lay out workpiece features using SolidWorks 2D CAD.
Applied Mathematics for Manufacturing
CoreApply technical mathematics to solve shop-related problems in both the Imperial (inch) and SI (metric) systems, including calculations for machine shop layout, setup, and metal-removing operations.
Metallurgy & Materials Science
CoreIdentify the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic components, and describe identification systems and heat treatment processes used in toolmaking.
CNC Programming & CAD/CAM Systems
CoreLearn CNC programming utilizing a CAD/CAM system, including basic FANUC G-code programming for CNC machining centres and CNC turning centres, and select cutting tool materials for required applications.
Die Making Techniques
CoreSpecialize in stamping die fitting, alignment, and assembly techniques in the final term, covering all Level 2 apprenticeship outcomes for the tool and die maker trade in Ontario.
