Program Overview: Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Systems Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Systems Engineering (MSE) at Conestoga College is a four-year honours degree program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Upon graduation, you can pursue licensure as a professional engineer after completing mandatory work experience and passing the professional practice exam.

This program covers an interdisciplinary blend of mechanical, industrial, and control engineering topics, enabling you to design complex computer-controlled mechanical systems including automated manufacturing systems, robotic platforms, and renewable energy solutions. A project-based curriculum model allows you to learn by doing while building strong skills in business methodologies, project management, and environmental protection.

Your first year consists of a common engineering foundation shared across all Conestoga engineering degrees, after which you specialize in mechanical systems. Twelve months of paid co-op work terms are integrated into the program, providing real-world industry experience and professional connections before graduation.

Key Program Highlights

  • CEAB-accredited honours degree qualifying graduates for professional engineer licensure in Canada
  • Twelve months of paid co-op work terms integrated into the four-year program structure
  • Project-based curriculum covering design, manufacturing, automation, and control systems
  • Ontario's only college offering fully accredited engineering degrees

Curriculum and Course Modules

The MSE curriculum is delivered through a project-based model that progressively builds from foundational engineering principles to advanced technologies in design, manufacturing, and automation. Students begin with a common first-year engineering foundation before specializing in mechanical systems topics across subsequent years.

Engineering Fundamentals and Design

Covers core engineering mathematics, natural sciences, and introductory design principles. Students explore topics across mechanical systems, building systems, sustainable design, and electrical systems through hands-on projects.

Mechanical Systems and Thermodynamics

Focuses on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science as they apply to mechanical system design and analysis. Students develop the ability to model and simulate mechanical systems that conform to design specifications.

Manufacturing and Automation

Covers automated manufacturing systems including mechanical components, conveyors, electrical and pneumatic actuators, sensors, and robotics. Students learn to design and optimize production processes for efficiency and quality.

Control Systems Engineering

Explores the principles of control engineering used to develop and maintain control systems for machinery and industrial processes. Students apply critical thinking to formulate and solve complex engineering problems.

Project Management and Business Methodologies

Develops skills in project management, business methodologies, environmental protection, and interpersonal team dynamics. Students learn to lead engineering projects while considering economic, environmental, and societal factors.

Capstone Engineering Project

A culminating project where students integrate their design, manufacturing, and automation skills to solve a complex real-world engineering problem. This project demonstrates readiness for professional engineering practice.
