Program Overview: Environmental Engineering Applications
The Environmental Engineering Applications graduate certificate at Conestoga College meets the growing demand for trained technologists and environmental scientists in areas such as brownfield redevelopment, environmental monitoring, regulatory compliance, and enforcement. Developed in consultation with representatives from the environmental industry, this program enhances existing technical skills and competencies for qualified college or university graduates seeking careers in the environmental workforce.
Studies focus on the application of current engineering and scientific principles to protect and manage the environment, covering environmental monitoring and investigations, environmental site assessment, contaminated site management and cleanup, environmental enforcement and regulations, solid and hazardous waste management, water quality, and air quality monitoring and permitting. The 40-hour HAZWOPER training course is included as part of the program curriculum.
Hands-on training is a cornerstone of the program, with classroom instruction complemented by project mentoring sessions at local consulting firms, environmental monitoring training in the field, visits to solid waste facilities, health and safety training, and visits to sites undergoing environmental investigation or cleanup. The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term, giving you the opportunity to earn money while applying what you have learned in a real workplace environment.

Curriculum and Course Modules
The Environmental Engineering Applications program delivers a comprehensive curriculum of 14 compulsory courses covering the full spectrum of environmental engineering practice. The program is reviewed and updated by a Program Advisory Committee comprised of practitioners from the consulting, manufacturing, and public sectors to ensure relevance and inclusion of employable skills.
Covers the principles and methodologies of human health and ecological risk assessment for contaminated sites, including regulatory frameworks and risk communication strategies used in professional environmental practice.
Provides hands-on training in the collection and classification of geologic media according to ASTM standards, installation and sampling of stream bed piezometers, surface water and sediment sampling, soil vapour probe installation and monitoring, and hydraulic conductivity testing.
Introduces basic AutoCAD skills required to create and edit drawings that accompany environmental reports, including site plans with environmental monitoring locations, zones of soil contamination, groundwater plumes, and geologic cross-sections to scale.
Examines the principles and practices of solid and hazardous waste management, including waste characterization, treatment technologies, landfill design, regulatory compliance, and strategies for minimizing waste and optimizing sustainability.
Covers Canadian environmental legislation, regulatory frameworks, and enforcement procedures, preparing students to complete projects in accordance with health and safety requirements and environmental policy at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels.
