Program Overview: Electrical Engineering Technology at Conestoga College
The Electrical Engineering Technology advanced diploma program at Conestoga College is a three-year program designed to provide you with both theoretical and practical experience, enabling you to work in a wide variety of electrical engineering areas including power systems and process control. The two main themes you will cover are Power Systems and Industrial Automation, encompassing topics such as Electrical Theory, PLC Programming, Power Systems and Protection, Instrumentation and Controls, and Power Electronics.
In the first two years, you gain hands-on experience with electric motors, controls, PLCs, generators, transformers, and their industrial applications. In the third year, you advance to complex PLC applications as applied to industrial processes including machine controls, PID controls, batching operations, remote monitoring, and servo systems.
The program includes an optional 16-month co-op stream consisting of four consecutive four-month work terms, giving you substantial real-world industry experience. Upon graduation, you will meet the academic requirements to become a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), and you will have a pathway to the Bachelor of Engineering in Power Systems Engineering program.
Key Program Highlights
- Optional 16-month co-op with four consecutive work terms providing extensive industry experience in the electrical sector
- Graduates meet the academic requirements for Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation through OACETT
- Pathway to the Bachelor of Engineering in Power Systems Engineering degree through advanced standing
- Hands-on training in PLC programming, power systems, industrial automation, SCADA, CAD, and renewable energy (PV solar) systems
Curriculum and Modules
The Electrical Engineering Technology curriculum balances rigorous electrical theory with extensive hands-on lab work. Over six semesters, you progress from foundational concepts to advanced industrial applications, covering power systems, automation, instrumentation, and emerging energy technologies.
Covers fundamental DC and AC electrical theory, circuit analysis techniques, and the principles underlying electrical systems used in industrial and commercial applications.
Introduces programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and progresses to advanced applications including machine controls, PID controls, batching operations, and remote monitoring of industrial processes.
Explores electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution systems alongside protection schemes, transformer design, and system reliability principles.
Covers the theory, operation, and control of AC and DC motors and generators, including variable frequency drives and motor control circuits used in industrial automation.
Focuses on industrial instrumentation, measurement devices, and process control systems including SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) technologies used in utilities and manufacturing.
