Program Overview

The BSc in Computer Science Engineering at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) provides you with a thorough understanding of the tools, methods, applications, and practice of computer science and information technologies. The program is both theoretical and practical in orientation, with the goal of providing an education directly applicable to positions in industry.

The integrated curriculum spans seven semesters with a total of 210 ECTS credits. During the first four semesters, you cover foundational and core engineering subjects, while the final three semesters include specialization courses, laboratory work, project assignments, and thesis preparation.

From the fifth semester onward, you can choose between two specializations: Software Engineering, which focuses on data-driven application design and object-oriented development principles, or Infocommunications, which covers networks enabling flexible and efficient information transfer and processing. BME, founded in 1782, is the oldest technical university in Europe and produces approximately 70% of Hungary's engineering degrees.

Curriculum & Modules

The curriculum is structured across seven semesters, beginning with foundational mathematics and engineering sciences before progressing to specialized computer science topics. Out of the 210 credits, 80 are dedicated to computer engineering and underlying knowledge, with additional credits allocated to English language courses (6 credits), economics (10 credits), field-related electives (10 credits), and humanities electives (4 credits).

Mathematics and Natural Sciences

40 ECTS

Covers calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, discrete mathematics, and physics, providing the essential mathematical and scientific foundation for computer science studies.

Core Computer Engineering

80 ECTS

Encompasses programming fundamentals, algorithms, data structures, computer architectures, operating systems, databases, and software engineering principles through both lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions.

Software Engineering Specialization

30 ECTS

Focuses on the design and development of data-driven applications, model-based and object-oriented design principles, and modern software development methodologies. Available from the 5th semester.

Infocommunications Specialization

30 ECTS

Covers networks enabling flexible and efficient information transfer and processing, forming the basis for implementing services in informatics, telecommunications, and distributed systems. Available from the 5th semester.

Economics and Management Studies

10 ECTS

Introduces fundamental concepts in micro- and macroeconomics, business management, and the economic aspects of engineering projects, preparing students for professional environments.

Thesis and Project Work

20 ECTS

Includes training laboratory sessions, a project laboratory, and the BSc thesis project in the 7th semester. Students must defend their thesis and pass a final exam to earn the degree.
