MA Fine Art at Arts University Plymouth

The MA Fine Art at Arts University Plymouth deepens your studio practice by helping you situate it within critical and contemporary contexts, providing you with the opportunity to develop your ideas and work in a practice-led, interdisciplinary environment. Curriculum and Program Structure

The MA Fine Art follows a comprehensive Masters structure shared across specialist subjects, enabling postgraduate students to focus on creative strategies and processes through three sequential units. The core tuition focuses on research methodology, critical thinking, practice-led research methods, and professional and conceptual frameworks, complemented by a unique programme of cross-disciplinary Research Intensives.

Unit 1: Investigating Practice

60 Credits

This foundational unit supports you in investigating your creative practice, establishing research questions and developing a critical framework. You will engage with research methodologies and begin situating your work within contemporary art contexts.

Unit 2: Testing and Developing Ideas

60 Credits

Building on Unit 1, this module provides an opportunity to further develop practice through a self-directed artistic project. Artistic practice is developed, questioned, reflected on and analysed through dialogues, presentations, seminars and critiques.

Unit 3: Final Major Project

60 Credits

This culminating unit enables you to undertake artistic research through an individual or collaborative MA project. You produce artistic research in relation to a selected issue or theme, supported by a written project report and disseminated in an appropriate form.

Research Intensives

Integrated

A unique component of the postgraduate curriculum, Research Intensives are short-format, deep learning sessions in areas of creative expertise led by research-active staff and external specialists. These sessions enrich subject-specific study with adjacent practices, cultural theories and creative methodologies.

Critical and Contextual Studies

Integrated

Critical writing enables you to contextualise your practice and explore conceptual and critical frameworks. You develop skills in articulating and positioning your work within broader contemporary art discourse and international cultural debates.

Professional Practice and Exhibition

Integrated

You will develop professional skills relevant to exhibiting, curating and presenting your work publicly. Opportunities may include professional exhibitions, residencies, placements, fellowships and bursaries that help you test your ideas beyond the taught curriculum.
