Overview

Biomedical Engineering is a branch of engineering that aims to develop, produce and efficiently use devices and biomaterials used for diagnosis, treatment and research purposes through engineering applications to solve problems encountered in the field of health and meet their needs.

Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that allows collaboration with basic science and engineering fields such as biology, physics, chemistry, mechanics, electrical electronics and computers, as well as medicine. Our program aims to train effective Biomedical Engineers in the field with the support of the strong Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences staff, Clinical Simulation and Advanced Endoscopic-Robotic Surgery Education Center-CASE and its technologically equipped campus.

Although the Department of Biomedical Engineering is a department focused on health, it serves the health sector in a wide range of areas. There are a wide range of fields of study from biomaterials to tissue engineering, from nanobiotechnology to bioengineering, from biotechnological medicine to molecular modeling, from the development of bedside diagnostic systems for the diagnosis of diseases with biosensor technologies to targeted drug delivery systems, from the processing of large health data with artificial intelligence technologies to the development of methods that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, from the development of medical imaging and image processing technologies, from the development of physical therapy and rehabilitation applications by combining them with engineering applications to athlete health with biomechanical technologies.

For this purpose, we have focused our elective courses in our curriculum, which is particularly project-oriented, on these areas and created focus areas such as biomaterials, nanobiotechnology and clinical engineering. In our clinical innovation and biodesign course, which we carry out entirely in a practical manner, our students visit many different clinical departments one-on-one and identify real-time clinical problems with their observations there and present projects that will provide solutions to these problems. Our students, who have gained experience with such courses since the day they started the Biomedical Engineering program, have also established a solid infrastructure with the basic engineering courses they have taken and then become experts in different subjects with the rich elective courses they have taken in the focus areas I have mentioned.

Our students can do their summer internships in companies or hospitals that are suitable for their interests, as well as by participating in the scientific studies of faculty members. They can also find long-term or short-term internship opportunities in various sectors and fields in Acıbadem Healthcare Group companies. Here, they can do internships in a wide variety of departments from R&D to quality in various health sectors, from clinical laboratories to biomedical departments, genetic diagnosis laboratories.

We have a dynamic faculty member staff who are well-equipped, have experience abroad. This valuable team continues their research in the Biomaterials Center and Nanobiotechnology Center, which are spread over an area of 1,500 m2 and equipped with the most up-to-date advanced technologies. Starting from the first year, our students have the opportunity to participate in our work in these centers according to their areas of interest. Our students who work on our projects supported by TÜBİTAK, the European Union and our University Research Funds can also take part in these projects as TÜBİTAK scholarship holders.

Our department students have the opportunity to minor and double major in Computer Engineering, Molecular Biology and Genetics, as well as Psychology, Sociology and Health Management.

This engineering branch, which brings together academic sciences, clinics and industry, with the main purpose of producing technological solutions needed in the field of health, is rapidly developing and the need for Biomedical Engineers to be employed is increasing day by day. We follow our graduates closely and are proud of them every day, because they find job opportunities in world-renowned companies and universities, both in academia and in the sector, both domestically and internationally.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering works in direct collaboration with CASE. This center, which is a virtual hospital area, houses medical simulators and many of the medical devices used in hospitals. Especially in recent years, since the design of smart materials, mathematical models and medical simulation systems have become a priority, the Department of Biomedical Engineering is a department that trains engineers who can design and produce solutions to real problems in these areas.

Our Biodesign Center, established with the support of the Ministry of Development and the Istanbul Development Agency, is a center where both our students and all other researchers can implement their health-focused innovative ideas and produce prototypes of the products they develop. In the “Design for Medicine” hackathons we organize periodically in this center, nearly a hundred students from many different universities and departments compete in the established interdisciplinary teams and gain very special experience on situations they will encounter in real life with the products they develop in different fields. In addition, the maturation of new business ideas in the field of health, their transformation into products and their implementation are also possible in our Incubation Center, which is also within the body of our university. Thus, our students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering graduate as Biomedical Engineers who are prone to teamwork, have high ethical values and are open to continuous learning by experiencing both clinical and sectoral applications within this carefully designed ecosystem from the day they first set foot in the department, taking part in multidisciplinary projects.
