MSc Aerial Robotics at the University of Bristol
The MSc Aerial Robotics at the University of Bristol equips you with the knowledge to become an innovator in aerial robotic systems, tackling the latest challenges for Uncrewed Air Vehicles (UAVs) and drones. Foundational skills in flight dynamics, control, and avionics are complemented by disruptive technologies such as autonomous navigation and bio-inspiration.
This programme exposes you to a wide range of advanced engineering and computer science concepts, with opportunities to apply them to hands-on aerial robotics projects. Flight testing may be carried out at facilities including an indoor flight arena at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory or the outdoor flying site at Fenswood, Long Ashton.
Bristol has a long history associated with aerospace, with the city home to Airbus, Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, Leonardo Helicopters, and a range of smaller SMEs. Drawing on this expertise, the programme covers conventional vehicle design and onboard systems alongside wider supporting robotics technologies including AI, ethics, and the legal framework in which they operate.
Key Programme Highlights
- Access to the Bristol Robotics Laboratory indoor flight arena and the Fenswood outdoor flying site for hands-on UAV testing
- Curriculum integrating AI, autonomous navigation, bio-inspiration, flight dynamics, control, and avionics
- Strong industry connections with Airbus, Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, and Leonardo Helicopters based in Bristol
- Previously accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), currently undergoing scheduled re-accreditation
Curriculum and Modules
The MSc Aerial Robotics comprises core and optional units across two taught terms, followed by a substantial research dissertation. The programme emphasises a systems approach, considering integration at technology, operational, and environmental levels. During your second term, you will begin a major research project making up one-third of the overall MSc, working with aerospace industry partners or on existing aerial robotics research projects.
Group Project in Aerial Robotics
20 CreditsA collaborative project addressing a course-related challenge in robotics, supervised by an academic. Modelling, simulation, and where possible hardware development are encouraged.
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
10 CreditsA broad introduction to AI and machine learning approaches, covering supervised learning, classification, regression, and the opportunity to implement AI algorithms using relevant software tools.
Covers the fundamental principles of aircraft flight dynamics, stability analysis, and control system design essential for aerial vehicle operation and autonomy.
Explores the technologies and algorithms enabling UAVs to navigate autonomously, including sensor fusion, path planning, and simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM).
Examines the electronic systems used in aerial vehicles, including communication systems, sensors, data processing hardware, and integration of onboard computing for real-time decision-making.
MSc Dissertation Project
60 CreditsA substantial individual research project conducted in partnership with an aerospace industry partner or aligned with an existing aerial robotics research project. Topics range from advanced control to bio-inspired technologies and commercial applications.
