Program Overview: MA Sustainable Design at Kingston University
The Sustainable Design MA at Kingston University helps you channel your creativity towards building a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable society. This multi-disciplinary course focuses on the power of social innovation, systems thinking, and design for service to drive collective sustainable change in both developed and developing world settings.
Throughout the program, you will explore innovative, practical, provocative, speculative and radical ways to realise sustainable visions through design. You will examine the diverse agendas that sustainability addresses and the intersectional challenges it presents, while developing critical thinking skills and gaining practical experience for further study or employment.
Based at Kingston School of Art's Knights Park campus, you will work alongside students from other design disciplines in specialist workshops and studios equipped with the latest design software. The course incorporates collaboration with industry partners such as Design Council, Futerra, and Active Minds, ensuring real-world relevance and professional connections.

Curriculum and Modules
The Sustainable Design MA curriculum combines specialist sustainable design modules with interdisciplinary learning across the Design School's postgraduate programme. You will engage with research techniques, user-centred and participatory methods, experimental making, prototyping, and user testing throughout your studies.
Sustainable Design Practice
40 creditsExplores how contemporary and emerging design practices relate to sustainability through responsible practice. You will develop critical design as a tool to interrogate, articulate and disseminate your ideas through experimentation with imaginative and varied formats.
Design for Social Innovation
20 creditsFocuses on an emerging mode of design practice gaining popularity within design professions and the public sector. This module addresses the growing demand for designers who can redesign public services and deliver programmes more effectively. Also available as a stand-alone module.
Research Methods and Ethics
20 creditsDevelops your understanding of user-centred design research methods such as personas, journey mapping, role-playing, and user diaries. You will consider your own capabilities, values, and ethics as a researcher and learn how critical reflection informs effective decision making.
Critical and Contextual Studies
20 creditsEngages you with theoretical and contextual studies through curated reading lists and lectures. You will think critically about both sustainability and design practice, examining global perspectives and the diverse agendas of sustainability.
Major Project
60 creditsA self-directed capstone project where you bring together all the skills and knowledge developed throughout the course. You will explore aspects of sustainability that resonate with you personally, working towards becoming a Citizen Designer.
Professional Placement (Optional)
0 credits (Pass/Fail)A 12-month work placement providing the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in an appropriate working environment. This assessed module develops key employability skills and subject-specific professional skills, and is covered by the Student Route visa for international students.
