Founded in 1702 by Emperor Leopold I Habsburg, the University of Wrocław evolved from a modest Jesuit academy known as the Leopoldina into one of Poland's largest and most respected academic institutions. Today it comprises 12 faculties, offers over 170 areas of study, and educates more than 22,000 students and 660 doctoral candidates.
The university has a distinguished legacy of academic excellence, with nine Nobel Prize winners associated with the institution, including Theodor Mommsen, Philipp Lenard, Erwin Schrödinger, Max Born, and Fritz Haber. Since 2020, it has been part of Poland's Initiative of Excellence – Research University program, making it the only university in south-western Poland to receive this prestigious research designation.
As a member of the Arqus European University Alliance alongside institutions from Granada, Bergen, Graz, Leipzig, Lyon, Padova, and others, the University of Wrocław maintains strong international partnerships.
