Program Overview: Visual Arts and the Built Environment (VABE)
The Visual Arts and the Built Environment (VABE) program is a unique cross-border offering from the University of Windsor's School of Creative Arts in collaboration with the University of Detroit Mercy's School of Architecture. This combined program blends the study of art and architecture, giving you breadth of knowledge and experience in both disciplines across two cities and two countries.
Students take courses at both institutions in areas such as architectural design, art history, contemporary art, visual culture, construction, and environmental technology. You will learn through the exploration of design problems, working independently and in small self-directed teams, with opportunities to publicly present your work and receive feedback from peers, faculty, and practicing architects.
At the end of your third year, qualified students may apply to the Architectural Program at the University of Detroit Mercy, leading to either a Bachelor of Science in Architecture or, with one additional year, a professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree. Alternatively, you can complete your fourth year at the University of Windsor and graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and the Built Environment.
