Program Overview: Electrical Engineering Co-Op at University of Windsor

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Electrical Engineering (Co-Op) at the University of Windsor equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of electrical engineering. You will learn about robots, autonomous cars, smart cities, the Internet, network design, and more, preparing you for a rapidly evolving industry with broad employment opportunities.

After a common first year shared with all engineering students, you will take specialized courses in numerical programming, circuit analysis, sensors, electronic device design, digital design, electromagnetic fields, signals, and physical electronics. You can also consider specializing in power systems, signal processing and communication, circuit design, computer engineering, or automotive electronics.

The integrated co-op component gives you the chance to gain valuable paid work experience with leading employers during your studies. Many students hold patents on new discoveries and inventions developed while at UWindsor, and graduates meet the educational requirements for registration as a Professional Engineer (PEng) in Canada.

Key Program Highlights

  • Integrated co-op work terms providing hands-on industry experience during second and third year
  • Specialization options in power systems, signal processing, circuit design, computer engineering, and automotive electronics
  • Access to the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation with 80 research labs and cutting-edge teaching technology
  • Graduates qualify for Professional Engineer (PEng) designation in Canada

Curriculum and Course Modules

The Electrical Engineering Co-Op program follows a structured curriculum beginning with a common first-year engineering foundation. From second year onward, you progress into specialized electrical engineering courses while completing co-op work terms during designated semesters. The curriculum is designed to build competencies in microelectronics, sensors, computer engineering, robotics, communications, and power systems.

Engineering Mechanics and Thermofluids

Core

Foundational courses covering engineering mechanics principles and thermofluids, forming part of the common first-year engineering curriculum shared across all engineering disciplines.

Circuit Analysis and Electrical Fundamentals

Core

Comprehensive study of electrical and computing fundamentals including circuit analysis techniques, providing the essential foundation for all subsequent electrical engineering coursework.

Digital Logic Design

Core

Introduction to digital systems design including Boolean algebra, combinational and sequential logic circuits, and hardware description languages used in modern digital engineering.

Signals and Systems

Core

Analysis of continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems, covering Fourier analysis, Laplace transforms, and system response characterization essential for communications and control engineering.

Electromagnetic Fields and Photonics

Core

Study of electromagnetic theory, wave propagation, and photonic principles with applications in telecommunications, antenna design, and optical systems engineering.

Capstone Design Project

Core

A culminating senior-year project where students apply their accumulated knowledge to plan and execute a large-scale engineering project, managing resources while balancing cost, quality, and schedule considerations.
