Program Overview: MA in Sustainable Development
The MA in Sustainable Development at the University of Warsaw is an interdisciplinary graduate programme conducted in English by the University Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (UCBS). It responds to the global challenge of rethinking development models to lay the foundations for a more sustainable, equitable future. The programme draws on the expertise of eight university faculties, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Regional Studies, Geology, Economic Sciences, Law and Administration, and Management.
The programme offers integrated knowledge and an in-depth understanding of sustainability across various scientific disciplines. Students gain insight into the complexity of sustainability challenges and the variety of available solutions, while developing critical thinking and an open attitude toward a rapidly changing world. The highly international student body enriches academic discussions with diverse cultural perspectives on global issues such as climate change.
Through a mix of lectures, laboratory exercises, seminars, workshops, field trips, and practical projects with external experts, students acquire both theoretical foundations and practical competences. The final semester is devoted to a master's thesis supported by field research in organizations and institutions aligned with the student's research topic.

Foundations of Sustainable Development
15 ECTSAn introductory module covering the principles, history, and frameworks of sustainable development, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the interconnections between environmental, social, and economic systems.
Environmental Science and Ecology
15 ECTSExplores the natural science foundations of sustainability, including biodiversity, ecosystem services, climate science, and the physical and chemical processes underlying environmental change.
Sustainable Planning and Resource Management
15 ECTSCovers planning and management processes, the use of raw materials, and economic analysis in implementing sustainable development goals in both urban and rural contexts.
Law, Policy, and Governance for Sustainability
15 ECTSExamines legal frameworks, environmental policy, and governance structures at local, national, and international levels that shape sustainable development processes and outcomes.
Sustainable Development Tools and Best Practices
15 ECTSProvides an overview of best practices and tools currently used to support sustainable development processes, with practical projects involving practitioners and experts from outside the university.
Master's Thesis and Research Field Study
30 ECTSThe final module is devoted to writing a master's thesis, supported by a research field study conducted in organizations and institutions selected in accordance with the student's research topic.
