Overview
The University of Toledo Physician Assistant Program (UTPA) is a 27-month graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) degree with a Physician Assistant concentration. It was the first graduate level PA Program in the State of Ohio. The charter Physician Assistant class of twelve students was accepted in the Fall of 1996.
There will be 40 applicants accepted for the next incoming class.
State-Of-The-Art Campus
The UToledo PA Program and the College of Nursing share the fine facilities of the Collier Building on the Health Science Campus. The Physician Assistant Program classrooms and laboratories are state-of-the-art and include modern educational technology such as the Interprofessional Immersion Skill Center, The Center for Creative Instruction and The Ruth M. Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center.
Why UToledo Physician Assistant Studies Program
- Well-established PA Program: We are one of the first accredited PA programs in Ohio since 1996 and are the first graduate-level PA program in the state.
- Interdisciplinary training: Students participate in an interprofessional education (IPE) course with up to twelve other healthcare programs.
- Experience with underserved populations: Students see patients at the student-led Community Care Clinic in partnership with local clinicians, medical, pharmacy, nursing, and respiratory therapy students.
- Service-learning opportunities: Student engagement within the local Toledo community, like at a local urban garden that provides fresh, healthy foods to the community.
- PA Faculty: PA faculty are clinicians with experience in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, and OBGYN. The PA Program faculty includes several military veterans. Also, several of the faculty are graduates of the UToledo PA Program.

- Follows a block course schedule that is highly structured, detailed, and focused on pertinent material.
- PA faculty are practicing clinicians knowledgeable about current topics in medicine.
- Faculty engage students in interactive learning with patient cases in the classroom and the SIM center.
- Curriculum fosters critical thinking, independent learning, and professionalism.
- Experienced academic faculty conduct continuous curriculum assessments for ongoing improvement.
- Student success: Promoted by personalized student-faculty academic support and the Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) that provides comprehensive academic and wellness support services.
- Student leadership: Extensive leadership opportunities are available through the PA program, Physician Assistant national organizations, and student organizations within the University.
