Ancient History and Archaeology
University of Birmingham, United Kingdom
The Ancient History and Archaeology BA offers a unique dual perspective on the ancient world, combining the scientific rigour of archaeology with the critical interpretation of historical texts. The curriculum spans millennia, investigating the development of prehistoric Europe alongside the complex societies of Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece, and the Roman Empire. Students explore how these cultures lived, traded, and governed by studying material cultures—from monumental architecture to everyday pottery. A defining element of the programme is the emphasis on field archaeology and practical research. Students gain vital organizational and teamwork skills through hands-on work with artifact collections and participation in an international Study Tour. This tour provides a transformative experience where literature and landscape collide, such as studying Greek tragedy on the very sites where the myths were set. By diversifying their studies with optional modules in heritage management and digital humanities, graduates are expertly prepared for leadership roles in the museum sector, archaeological units, and the wider cultural heritage industry.
