Greek BA
Southwestern University Campus, United States
The Bachelor of Arts in Greek at Southwestern University is a rigorous and rewarding program designed for students passionate about exploring the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece. As part of the Classics Department, the program emphasizes mastery of ancient Greek through progressive language study, from introductory grammar to advanced reading of original texts by authors such as Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, and Thucydides. Students not only learn to translate and interpret classical works but also gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, philosophical, and historical contexts in which they were written.
A hallmark of the program is Southwestern’s participation in Sunoikisis, a nationwide collaborative initiative created in partnership with Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies. Through this innovative network, Southwestern students connect with peers and faculty from other institutions, join interdisciplinary seminars, and engage in shared research opportunities.
On campus, the program comes alive with traditions such as Exelauno Day, a celebration of Greek language and heritage where students showcase their learning through performances, presentations, and cultural activities. Small class sizes foster close mentorship with dedicated faculty, including distinguished scholars like Professor Hal Haskell, who has been instrumental in advancing Southwestern’s national reputation in Greek studies.
The program equips students with advanced skills in linguistic analysis, critical thinking, and cultural interpretation that extend far beyond classical studies. Graduates often pursue careers in law, education, publishing, ministry, archaeology, or academia, or continue their studies in graduate or professional schools. By combining language proficiency with a broad liberal-arts perspective, Southwestern’s Greek B.A. prepares students not only for professional success but also for a lifelong appreciation of the intellectual and cultural achievements of ancient Greece.
