The Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training (FFP) program at Seneca Polytechnic is a 12-month certificate program designed to prepare you for the challenges and rewards of a career as a firefighter or rescue specialist. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on training aligned with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
Your studies will include fire ground operations, fire suppression, emergency medical responder (EMR) training, and fire investigation. You will also gain hands-on experiential learning in fire apparatus operation, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response at dedicated fire training facilities and on campus.
This program is accredited by the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office (OFM) and provides you with several NFPA professional qualifications. Graduates also have the option to transfer into the Fire Protection Engineering Technician or Fire Protection Engineering Technology programs at Seneca for further study.

Curriculum & Modules
The FFP curriculum is structured to cover all essential competencies required for entry-level firefighters, blending classroom theory with intensive practical training. The program is delivered in Seneca's hybrid format, with some coursework online and hands-on components completed in person at campus and fire training facilities.
Covers tactical firefighting operations including fire attack strategies, search and rescue procedures, ventilation techniques, and incident scene management in various emergency scenarios.
Provides hands-on training in fire suppression methods, including the use of hose lines, nozzle techniques, water supply management, and coordinated team-based fire attack approaches.
Prepares students to provide immediate medical assistance during emergencies, covering patient assessment, CPR, first aid, trauma management, and medical emergency response protocols.
Introduces the principles and techniques of fire origin and cause determination, evidence preservation, scene documentation, and the legal framework surrounding fire investigations.
Trains students in the safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of fire department vehicles and apparatus, including pumper trucks, aerial devices, and related equipment.
