Clinical Psychotherapy

Clinical placements are embedded in the course. You will benefit from our extensive links with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, including the National Specialist Self-Harm Service, and 10 Windsor Walk - an award-winning community service that provides psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy. We welcome recent graduates as well as experienced professionals seeking to advance their knowledge and skills in psychoanalytic theories, clinical application to common mental health issues, and to the interface between mental and physical health. Our course will provide a strong foundation in theory and research methods that is linked to real-life clinical cases. We offer teaching by world-leading experts and practicing clinicians who are also psychotherapists and psychoanalysts along with clinical placements. Our course is suitable for students who would like to broaden their knowledge and skills as well as for students who would like to progress into professional qualifications. The course is well suited for psychology graduates who wish to pursue clinical psychology training, or graduates from any related discipline who consider pursuing a research PhD. British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) accreditation criteria for qualification in Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is minimum of 4 years of training with requirements in theory, clinical work with supervision, as well as individual psychotherapy. Candidates are required to be in individual psychotherapy for a period of time prior to starting clinical training. In the first year of the present course, we are working with the BPC for a memorandum of understanding with BPC Member Institutions which will provide the training required for qualification. The training involves three components: academic teaching, clinical work with supervision, and personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the requirement is that this is conducted by a BPC registered psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst for the entire length of the training and continue at least until qualification. The MSc course can help with suggestions. Candidates who have completed clinical training may be eligible for BPC registration in Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and may take up employment in NHS, Social Care and Third Sector settings or practice independently.
